5-Day Digital Photography Workshop
The Film to Digital Transition

Confused?
Are you confused by technology?

Let's face it—technology can sometimes be confusing. Are you perplexed by the whole idea of digital photography? This workshop is designed for film photographers who want to make the transition to digital capture. We'll examine the latest digital cameras and explain the differences between the film and digital formats. File formats, memory cards, image transfer and archiving, RAW capture, white balance, histograms - there's a entirely new digital language now which requires translation, and you'll be fluent in “Digitaleeze” before you leave. You'll learn how to use all these great new tools and you'll be able to apply these new digital tools to unleash your creative potential.

We will provide you with a framework that will enable you to control the fine nuances of your work in a way never possible in the wet darkroom. When you return home, you will have a template to build upon as you continue to expand your command of Photoshop.

Throughout the workshop, we'll discuss the visual and graphic elements that characterize strong, successful images. Short field trips into the neighboring Vermont countryside will allow you to make new images and apply what you are learning. The immediacy of digital capture allows us to review and discuss our images within moments after making them - another important tool for developing our creative vision. You'll leave the workshop understanding how to use your camera, how to apply Photoshop editing tools to your images and how to create powerful images which tell your story and set your creativity free.

These workshops are limited to 4 participants, and are conducted form my Poultney, Vermont studio. Registration and a “Welcome Dinner” are Sunday afternoon and evening, group workshops run Monday through Friday, and the workshop winds up with group and individual evaluations on Saturday morning.

Pezzulich Dr. Robert Pezzulich took this workshop immediately following his retirement, in preparation for a trip to Africa. He writes:
"The two most important aspects of the workshop for me were learning about the histogram and discovering the full capabilities of my camera. You emphasized taking test shots in any given setting and checking the histogram to ensure that we had the maximum highlights and shadow detail. This image was shot in RAW at 4:30 in the afternoon with my Canon 20D. A test shot, made just moments before, was slightly overexposed; I set the exposure compensation (something else that I learned about at the workshop) to -0.3 ev, shifting the histogram such that it fell completely within the desired range. When this guy suddenly (shockingly!) appeared to our left, bearing down on the Land Rover, I was barely able to capture two frames before our driver chose safety over valor and hit the gas. Had I not taken a test shot I would not have been able to get all the wonderful detail that I captured."
